At Jim McVey Consulting we specialise in helping small and medium sized companies establish an effective data governance capability.
After years in IT and data management, helping larger corporates to get their IT and data governance and data management together, it became evident that in the Australian market there was a gap. That gap is in the smaller company space. This is where companies have the same need for good data governance and management as the larger companies, but cannot afford to bring on-board one of the larger consulting firms or hire senior experienced specialists.
What do we do?
We provide advice to company executives and team members about the most appropriate model of data governance and data management for the company. Once there is clarity about what the company needs, we can assist with the following
- Develop a Data Management Framework to suit the company’s needs. The Framework defines the structure of data governance and data management components that will aid the company in progressing the data governance agenda.
- Draft the Data Management Policy for appropriate company executives to review and authorise
- Draft a Data Quality Standard for appropriate company executives to review and authorise
- As necessary draft other standards, such as a Metadata Management Standard, Data Handling Standard, Data Security Standard or others as agreed with company management
- Define a set of Data Practices that set a standard set of processes to care for the company’s data
- Define a program of work, if required, to retro-fit data governance to existing data and to establish data governance over new data
- Undertake appropriate training for the company’s team members
- Establish a communication regime that is suitable for the company
To help these smaller companies to get around this, we have developed the JMC Data Management Framework template. The template is generic and is unlikely to satisfy every company 100% of the time. However, a company that adopts the Framework only needs to make updates to suit the company’s own position, either alone or with support from Jim McVey Consulting.
The template Framework is under development constantly. In May 2026, it includes the following artefacts:
- Data Management Framework document
- Data Management Policy
- Data Quality Standard
- Enterprise Data Architecture Standard (under development)
- Data Reporting Standard (under development)
- Metadata Standard (under development)
- Governance Roles and Structures (under development)
- Data Practices Overview and Practice Guides
Additional policies, standards and procedures may be added readily.
